They're not just "harder" - they present a new set of gameplay mechanics which are much more beautifully balanced than the toned-down combat at lower levels. With all 12 Idols turned on the 'Dream' challenge levels are nothing like they were when you played through them during the campaign. Instead of simply buffing enemies, the Idols fundamentally change the way you must approach each encounter and raise the threat level of combat by orders of magnitude, forcing you to maximize the strengths of your weapon & upgrade choices. Of course by the time all your weapons are upgraded to level 5 and all the modifier skills are unlocked, the normal enemies don't present any real challenge - but that's where I think the 'Idol' system of difficulty scaling becomes so genius. By level 5, with the right upgrade choices, it is my favorite weapon against almost every combination of enemies). But by the end of the game your first weapon, the Cael Hammer, has been upgraded with relatively stronger buffs than your last weapon, the Calamity bazooka thing, and at the end-game all your weapons are basically viable alternatives, opening up completely skill-based, horizontal gameplay (For example, the mortar is a gimmicky weapon at level 1, made only to solve a few "puzzle" battles and useless in general combat. The campaign is based around a linear progression with levels to give you avatar strength as you progress, and at the base (un-upgraded) level, each new weapon is roughly stronger than the last weapon. What I think makes Bastion so much fun isn't even available until you've beaten the campaign - it's the 'Idol' challenge markers and how they change play mechanics in the endgame. ![]() My take on why it's a great game though - well, some game designer friends and I were actually trying to take this apart a few weeks ago. I won't say anything about the art direction or story - those speak for themselves and I don't think there's any real doubt about the quality level there. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
